October 26th, 2001. Brian gets a haircut. Oh lord. I was not looking forward to this. Life sucks when you can't communicate, especially when charades don't cut it. How do you mime "Please shave the sides and back, keep it long at the top"? You could make a buzzing noise, mimic the motion of shaving the sides and indicate length up top, but it still leaves room for lots of interpretation. I mean, for all I know, running my hand up the side of my head in Japan could mean "Please take me in the back and beat me." I don't even want to think about what the buzzing could mean. |

Ok. I need to get rid of some of this hair. I can't speak Japanese well enough to describe anything and performing a pantomime is out of the question. What the heck am I going to do? Ah, I know! |
Why didn't I think of this sooner? |

Well, this is the place I am going to get my haircut at. It's right across from my apartment. I went into the shop and talked (sort of) with the barber there. He's really cool. After I told him where I lived, he knew that I was a Nova instructor. He told me that his place was by appointment only, and that I would have to come back at 4 pm. Looking around, the place was empty, and always seems to be empty. I got the feeling that he might be like that kid in the 6th sense. Then I got the hell out of there. I returned at 4 and got my haircut. All throughout the time (took about an hour) we muddled our way through a conversation about where I was from, his marriage and schoolgirls. Japanese men love their schoolgirls, and who can blame them? |
The cut cost me 2,800 JPY (for a cut only, no shampoo or shave), which works out to about $40 CAD. And that's one of the cheaper places. No wonder all the guys here have such long hair. No one can afford a haircut! Just as I left the place, the barber handed me a piece of paper with a bunch of Japanese writing on it, looked something like an advertisment. It also had his name (in Japanese. I think he said his name was Akira, but not sure), email address and URL. I have yet to check out his website. I wonder what's on it? So, here is my new do, from the side. I like it. Below, you can see it from the front. What do you think? The problem is that the guy didn't cut it all that short. I will need another haircut in about two weeks or so. Augh. |
