November 23rd, 2001. Shibuya, Harajuku and Omotesando with Cheese. I am watching Ally McBeal as I write this and I am finding the dialogue quite witty and enjoyable. Robert Downey's character is so sweet. I really wish I were joking here. Help me. Please. So, today was fun. I met up with a friend of mine, whom I haven't seen since highschool. His name is Cheese and he's on a co-op term in Tokyo. It was great to see the guy again, he's the same as I remember him to be. This is just so strange, we had so many years from 7th grade until the end of highschool, yet hardly saw each other. It took the isolation of a foreign country to finally meet up. We met at Shibuya and seeing as how the weather was so agreeable, we decided to take a little walk to Harajuku. |

Back at the shrine in Harajuku. This time it was sunny and we got to see a wedding procession. To be honest, I think that this place looked a lot better in the rain. |

The streets were a little more crowded today. I went in search of sunglasses, but they all look really strange here. I should have taken a picture of a sunglass rack. One shop clerk asked me what style I was looking for (in great English, mind you) and seemed confused when I said that I wanted something with dark lenses. Dark lenses? You mean, you actually want sunglasses that block out the sun? It was a foreign concept to him. They had every possible style and shade of lens, but nothing that actually protected your eyes from the sun. People wear sunglasses solely for fashion here. I think I'll just stick to squinting. |
Anyone got some duct tape? Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that this isn't exactly Japan's pride and joy when it comes to earthquake-proofing a buliding. I suppose that it isn't something to joke about, but you would think that the guy who works beside the crack would say something. Joe: "Hey Bill, do you feel a draft in here?" Bill: "Yeah, a little." Joe: "Do you think it has anything to do with this giant crack running down the side of the building?" Bill: "Dunno." Joe: "I think I can see my house from here. Oh crap, it's garbage day today." |

I'm not sure that this is hygenic, but everyone was eating them on the street and I wanted one too. At first, I thought it was some funky ice cream cone, but I was wrong. It's a yam. |
This is Cheese with his yam. It cost us 500 yen for two of them. They were absolutely delicious, though I don't think that I would ever buy anything like this back home. |

Here's
the yam man. Yes, we bought food from the back of a truck.

This is Aoyoma, near Omotesando station. It's a little east of Harajuku and Shibuya. Nice place. I imagine that it's incredible once the Christmas decorations go up. |

Still in the same square in Aoyoma. The cafe with the orange decor is really nice, but you can't see it because Cheese is in the way. |
The UN building. I was afraid to photograph this at first (what with the terrorism and all), as I was scared that four guys would jump me and pummel me. Then I remembered where I was and snapped away. |

This is part of the campus of the largest and most expensive private university in Tokyo, so I am told. |
This is one of the buildings on campus. It's beautiful here. Much like Glendon back in Toronto, except I'd happily pay $5 for parking. |

A statue in front of a movie theatre, near Omotesando. |
Back in Shibuya now. We have been walking for hours and I need to rest for a bit. I still had plans to meet up with Allie et al again, though that fell through in the end. |

If you go to the 6th floor of the Starbucks/Tsutaya building across from Hachiko Square, you will find the cafe I always go to for free internet access (it's called Ubsuna). I decided to sit down and actually pay for something for once here (I came here with Brenda and Craig once, but they wouldn't let me pay). Check out this menu. I guess their service isn't all that great here if the patrons are assualting the staff. |
See that coffee on the table? It cost $7. So where is this recession I keep hearing about? Failing economies do not serve $7 coffees. This place is pricey, but the view is nice. We are right behind the big TV screen on the building. If you look down through the window, you can view the chaos of the intersection, without getting stepped on or pushed. Maybe that's why the drinks cost so much here. |

Tell me this isn't cool. This is in the middle of Shibuya, just before Jackie Chan's restaurant. |
He's selling Chinese buns with meat in them. I think it's chah siu bau (bbq pork buns), or some variation of it. |
