December 10th, 2001. Three stories.

1.

The train was especially packed today for some reason. I squeezed on and found myself standing next to a lady. We were positioned so that she was pretty much looking into my ear. Each time the train jerked, she would fall into me. Now, normally, this wouldn't really bother me. When the train is totally rammed, you have to expect to be touched by other people. But this lady didn't seem to be even trying to keep her balance. I was beginning to suspect that she was just using me to stop her from falling forward.

I decided to test my theory, so the next time the train jerked, I took a small step to the left and the lady lurched forward and her nose slammed hard into my shoulder. She was quick with the "Sumimasen", and I felt badly afterwards, but I am not her personal leaning post. That'll learn her.

2.

I went to Don Q's today after work and did a bit of shopping. I would never eat Spam back home, but here, it's cool. I am also developing an unhealthy craving for Kraft Dinner.

I wonder if it tastes the same as the stuff back home. It's been a while since I have tried canned meat, so who knows? I might actually like it. And at worst, I can use it to polish any hardwood furniture I have.

3.

As I was washing up after yet another wonderful dinner of noodles, two of my Sri Lankan neighbours came over to chat with me. They marvelled at the fact that I could use chopsticks and said that they didn't know how.

I offered to teach them and spent a few minutes trying in vain to convey the secrets of the ancient Chinese art of using chopsticks.

To return the favour, they spent a few minutes trying to teach me the Sri Lankan art of speaking Japanese.
